Sole Survivors

Words Amie Elizabeth White

Winter is approaching in some parts of the world, so our contributing editor has put together a list of boots from High End to High street for all of us.

I’ll call this edit Sole Survivors. Sole: because its all about the footwear. Survivors: because its about the buy now, keep forever styles. They are the pieces you’ll love for life. From High End to High Street, here are the A/W boots you need to know.

THE CHELSEA BOOT…
These hit huge last year and the style isn’t slowing down for 21. Alexander McQueen and Bottega Veneta lead the way and thankfully, the high street was quick to follow. Bringing new dimensions to the classic, athletic soles & lengthening sides take practical to a whole new level. Pair with your favourite cropped jeans, style with your smartest shirt dress, or go cult classic with an all-black legging & blazer ensemble.

SOMETHING SOFT…

No more will you say “tough as old boots” with these investments. Built-in socks add a schoolboy playfulness to styles that could be stiff while shearling adds that luxe cosiness we all love when the Winter comes. How best to style it? Thick knits & shearling details for some cosy-meets-chic this A/W.

LIGHTER LEATHER…
For those who have neutralised their wardrobes or swear by beige and white, you can breathe a sigh of relief and turn away from using too-heavy blacks or bland browns to pull your look together. Shades of toffee and caramel make for a smooth and sophisticated shoe while paler shades look clean cut and slightly futuristic. Keep accessories to a similar shade ala Chloe this Winter.

RAINY WEATHER…

Because practicality is key, and boring is never an option. There was a huge revive and renewal of wellie boots last year and this year styles have become synonymous with every day boots so you never have to compromise. There’s no need to save these for a rainy day (and the UK is so unpredictable, you never know anyway!)

SUEDE FOR DAYS…
Suede has made a little comeback this year led by thigh-high dreamy fits from Brunello Cucinelli and sharper cut pieces like the Mavis from Jimmy Choo. Steer clear of pirate-inspired baggy styles to keep your look sharp and your style chic. Contrast the styles with leather fits & the softest silks.

KNEES THE LIMIT…
Long gone are the days where a knee-high was a no-no for the sophisticated. Flats, heels, work or weekend, the knee-high boot has become an increasingly popular style and is perfect for navigating the transeasonal period. Pair with a knitted midi dress or go for something a little more playful like a mini and an oversized blazer. The best accessory? A flash of flesh and a smug little smile.
