Makeup Do’s and Don’ts
Words Lina Mourey
It’s wedding season and there’s a few tips every bride should know before their big day, says LA makeup artist Lina Mourey.
I have worked on over a hundred weddings and through my experience I have accumulated my share of tips that just might save your life (kidding, but it could ease a lot of stress). Here are some do’s and don’ts to take into consideration.
The do’s
This might be the most important step to take: once you find a make-up artist you love, schedule a bridal trial if possible. Give yourself some time before your wedding, and bring some inspirational looks with you. This will ease so much of your nerves the day of, this will give you a chance to try a look you’ve been dreaming up seeing how this particular artist translates on you.
If you’re like me, we feel the prettiest with a little tan. Schedule a professional spray tan three days prior to your wedding. The color will be past its darkest shade now becoming more natural, and you’ll be avoiding the time where the color starts to exfoliate off. I suggest a professional spray so that it’s a hundred percent even and the color is most complimentary to your skin tone.
This might be nearly impossible, but if you can lock down 8 hours of sleep before saying I do you’re going to look your very best. Lack of sleep mixed with a little drinking the night before equals puffy under eye and dehydrated skin. The best option is to tucker away the earliest you can to ensure your skin is looking youthful and vibrant for your make up application and all the photos you’re about to have taken.
The final most important step – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Yes, it makes a huge difference for not only the initial make up application but the overall wear of it all night long. With the right skin prep we can make you appear like a glowing goddess but if your skin won’t absorb products because of it being dehydrated there is not much we can do. So make sure you’re drinking enough water to keep that skin supple and ready for glam.
The don’ts
The day of your wedding can be one of the most stressful days of your life, there are so many moving parts and you’re probably eye balling that mimosa wanting to take the edge off. But before you have one too many, keep in mind that with each alcoholic drink you consume it affects the glam. According to an article published on thelist.com, “You may also notice you're sweating more. When certain fluids aren't replaced, your body compensates by retaining the water it still has. It's not only your gut that will look puffy. Your feet, hands, face, and many other places could be affected.” Spoiler alert! Your makeup will not stay on. It doesn’t matter what concoction of setting powder I’ve come up with when it comes to the body heat alcohol produces, it will move some of the best products. Stick to one or two maximum until you’ve got all your most important photos out of the way!
Depending on how you want to look for your wedding day, you might be tempted to get a pair of lash extensions. However, sometimes combined with an eye shadow look it can impact how your pictures turn out. It also will be difficult to get that seamless soft bridal look when there is a thick set of lashes already taking space. If you must, go with a super natural lash extension and your make-up artist can always add more if you’re feeling like you want extra lash.
An important step to keep in mind is if you’re planning on waxing or using any facial hair removal products, do it one to two weeks prior. If you have ever gotten your face waxed, you know it affects the pigment of your skin, so any make up applied to that area will appear much lighter than the rest of your face.
With the bridal trial being such an important step, make sure you don’t change your mind the day of and want to decide to do something entirely different. Because stress is a factor here you may have more anxiety than usual sparking some last minute thoughts and if one of them is telling you to go more wild with your makeup you may regret it later.
