In 2020, the financial services sector contributed £164.8 billion to the UK economy, which represents 8.6% of the total economic output.
Today, female-owned small businesses make up 36% of all companies, but even though it may be easier than ever to get started as a female entrepreneur, starting a company from the ground-up can still feel a lot like the Wild Wild West, particularly when it comes to managing the business’ finances.
Entrepreneurship has long been a boys’ club that rarely opens its doors to women, much less women from Colombia, who are typically home-bound while the men work and call the shots.
Talented Colombian women are now changing the world daily, winning international acclaim and dominating fields as diverse as sports, film, food, science and finance. Maribel Ravelo is a wife, mother, pastor and the co-founder and Finance Director of DMR Property Services alongside ‘Girl Boss Online,’ the company she founded alongside her husband, and has used her talent to create invaluable testimonies of the country’s history and traditions.
She migrated to the UK as merely a teenager and fought to learn English and complete her college course and then worked in various 9-5 roles in the city.
After having her first child, her priority shifted from work life to being present in her child’s life. Financial education has been pivotal for Maribel to make daily decisions with regards to investments and taking the company from strength to strength.
Maribel is passionate about teaching others the value of financial education which she became aware of only after getting married. It was something she wished someone would have taught her the importance of when she was younger, and now seeks to help hundreds of women and young girls into a life of financial freedom.
As a female entrepreneur, Maribel is always on the lookout for other incredible women who would like to cultivate their own amazing brand, business, and name for themselves. She has volunteered as a youth mentor for two decades, helping hundreds of people to discover their purpose.
You can’t underestimate the power of a female role model when it comes to empowering other women, and Maribel is doing just that with her various platforms.
