Christina Adane, Activist, Board Member & Co-chair of Bite Back 2030
Christina Adane has always been involved and engaged with the world around her. Just 17-years of age, Adane’s generation received an early introduction into the world of the internet and social media from a very young age. Whilst many chose Tik Tok and ‘lifestyle’ Instagram posts, Adane has instead been moved to action.
At 11-years-old, Adane set up an Ebola crisis fund at her secondary school where she arranged various ways of raising money such as pupils paying £1 to come to school in their pyjamas and hosting a baking competition. It was from here that she found a love for bringing people together and making them unite under a cause.
She is a current co-chair at Bite Back 2030; a youth-led movement which actively addresses the injustices of the food industry with a focus on bridging the gap between healthy eating and young people. The organisation believes that it is the right of every child to have access to food that is not only healthy, but affordable and are therefore working towards eliminating child food poverty. Adane has been an active member since she was 15.
Earlier this year, she spoke to over 13,000 people about Bite Back’s work alongside British chef Jamie Oliver at WE Day UK. Following this, Adane successfully petitioned and won against the UK government’s ruling to take away school lunches from 1.3 million children, with entitlement to free school meals. Over 270,000 people signed the petition.
“In 2021, #IPLEDGE to continue the fight but making it broader and bigger. It’s been the one thing that I’ve had my whole body, my whole focus on. I definitely hope to take care of myself at the same time. I feel like it can overwhelm me and I lose sight of myself and what I have to do to take care of myself. One thing I’ve been struggling with is learning how to rest. #IPLEDGE that in terms of racism, the environment and even food, I really want to bring them together. I want to promote intersectionality.”
