Recognised for her contribution and service within the beauty industry spanning 25-years, Ruby Hammer MBE is considered one of the most highly regarded and accomplished makeup artists globally. Her namesake product line was created with the intention of reflecting both her experience as not only a makeup artist, but as a beauty expert - it was never to add more products into the midst of an already overcrowded space.

She entered the industry in 1998 with fellow WOTC covergirl and former makeup artist, turned business mogul, Millie Kendall MBE, with their innovative makeup line ‘Ruby & Millie’, which led the way for other cosmetics brands later down the line.

If this year has taught us nothing else, it’s that we do not need to progress at breakneck speed and that it’s very possible for someone else to press the breaks. For Hammer, she has discovered the importance of examining her own life and values and adapting where possible; taking stock before proceeding, whilst bearing in mind that her decisions and choices have an effect on others.

“I have used the tools available to me to help me navigate, from reading to increasing my knowledge where it is lacking, paying attention to common sense and my gut and knowing nothing is set in stone,” she tells WOTC, referring to her 2020.

“I have tightened my belt and made a commitment to carry on through the doom and gloom of the year. I haven’t just sunk to my knees. In a year where I could have bowed out, I am holding my head high and continuing to spread the message of inclusivity, emphasising and enhancing yourself and teaching people to embrace their unique beauty. The increase in social media which can be toxic to so many, is easy to be drawn in to. I want to provide a safe space for people to embrace themselves without the need for change.”

“In 2021, #IPLEDGE to provide equality in opportunity. I do it in my personal life and will try and endeavour to do it in my working life as well. I want to level the playing field wherever I can. Giving chances that everyone can grasp if they choose to. Live and let live, with compassion and a little bit of humour.”
