Rising Star Award Winner: Joice‌ ‌Etutu‌

Joice‌ ‌Etutu‌, Senior Reporter for BBC Africa and Multimedia Business Journalist

Joice Etutu is the future of journalism. For too long, the mainstream media has neglected real life stories and avoided uncomfortable questions.  Award winning Senior Reporter at BBC Africa and Senior Board Advisor, has captured the attention of millions of BBC viewers globally. Etutu is cementing herself as a daring journalist willing to challenge the status quo in a centuries old industry. In her words, she finds herself willing to   “challenge the status quo, expose wrongdoing and report on stories mainstream media is sometimes slow to understand.”

An MSc graduate of International Journalism and the Politics of  Development in Africa and the Middle East, she secured one out of 15 places on the competitive BBC Journalism trainee scheme. Only a week ago, Etutu was appointed as Senior Reporter, making her the youngest Correspondent in the deployment team.  Joice Etutu has reported and produced notable current affairs pieces and in depth-investigations into untold stories, bringing them to the forefront of mainstream news. Her contribution to File on 4’s ‘Undue Influence’, highlighting the phenomenon of social media influencers being paid by clinics to promote high-risk surgical procedures, received national recognition.

Joice Etutu is certainly a visionary. With the world restricted by a global lockdown, she turned to the power of data to inform her work and is pushing for the same attitude to be adopted in the news industry. It’s no surprise she has been honoured with Engine MHP’s Young Journalist Award for Social Media and Content Creation. She has been able to capture the attention of mass audiences with her versatile and creative approach to telling complex stories.
