The WOTC Health Editors’ Key Tips on Dealing With Blue Monday

Our health and wellness editors who make up a group of qualified doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physicians and therapists to name a few, have come together to help you view ‘Blue Monday,’ in a completely new way. Here’s what they have to say:

“The world has a way of always telling us  how we’re meant to feel. Often these things subliminally affect us if we don’t take time to evaluate. Instead of dwelling on what’s meant to be ‘Blue Monday,’ why not take some time to meditate on things you’re grateful for? You could right then down on ‘post it’ notes and stick them somewhere prominent, or even take photos of them and make an album on your phone that you can run to the next time you’re feeling low. Let’s be intentional about the way we feel - you have the power to produce your happiness!”

Dr Emma, Senior Health Editor

“The concept of ‘Blue Monday’ was published in 2005 as part of a sky travel press release, declaring it as the most depressing day of the year. It is important to consider that before 2005, Monday 17th January was just another 'normal' Monday and had no negativity or depression attached to it. So take this day as your personal day, redefine what this day means to you or what you want it to mean to you. Write it. Say it. Post it. Share it. I've decided to redefine my day today as a 'Gold Monday’”

Annabel, Psychology & Wellbeing Editor

“Why not tackle the ‘blues’ with a swim, gym workout or fitness class. Exercise helps to relieve you of stress, clear your mind, brighten your mood and it releases endorphins which is a plus!”

Bevery, Fitness Editor

“My top tip for managing any blue day is to be prepared; this can help to stay on top of things and minimise stress. So set your alarms, plan any tasks, meal prep to make sure you get your fuel for the day, and be sure to make time for self-care.”

Yetunde, Mental Health Editor

My top tip for ‘Blue Monday’ is doing something that will make you happy. Research shows that laughter has multiple benefits on the mind and body. It causes the release of serotonin, which lifts the mood!

Why not try:

- Watching your favourite show

- Meeting up with friends

- Going for a walk, whilst listening to your choice of music.

Just make sure whatever you do makes you happy!

Ebun, Pharmacist and Health & Lifestyle Editor
