What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a newly discovered coronavirus. It is transmitted by being in contact with infectious materials and surfaces (WHO, 2020). COVID-19 is characterised by a fever, cough, shortness of breath and other symptoms. COVID-19 was first noted in Wuhan, China in the year 2019 (WHO, 2020).

How Can it Spread?

Current evidence suggests that COVID-19 is spread through droplets when a person sneezes or coughs (NHS, 2020). COVID-19 can be spread: directly from close contact with an infected person (within 2 metres) where respiratory secretions can enter the eyes, mouth, nose or airways (NCDHHS, 2020 ).

What Does This Do for My Unborn Baby?

The Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG) suggests that pregnant women do not appear more likely to contract the infection than the general population (RCOG, 2020). The RCOG guidelines propose that new evidence suggest that vertical transmission (from mother to baby) is probable. This is all based on a small number of recent cases, however the current situation is changing and evidence will always be updated. There are currently no data suggesting an increased risk of miscarriage or early pregnancy loss in relation to COVID-19.

What Does This Mean To Me?

It is important for all pregnant women to follow the government guidelines regardless of their gestation to observe social distancing, wash their hands, stay at home unless it’s necessary to leave their home.

Should I Still Attend My Antenatal Appointments?

If you have been booked for a routine scan or antenatal appointment it is advised that you attend. Many hospital trust’s are providing virtual appointments, however if they have not cancelled your appointment and notified you then you should contact your maternity unit for advice before attending.

I’ve Heard I’ll Be in Labour Alone?

The latest guidelines from the RCOG suggest that women should have a single, asymptomatic birth partner during labour as other visitors are not permitted. This birth partner should stay with you at all times and are advised not to roam around the ward or the hospital (RCOG, 2020).

I am COVID Positive, What Do I Do?

If you are infected with COVID-19 you are advised to self-isolate at home for 7days. If you live with others they should self-isolate for 14 days starting from the day your symptoms started (Public Health England, 2020). Please notify your 111 and your maternity team if your symptoms worsen. Please avoid attending the maternity unit until you’ve spoken to your maternity team, they will arrange a safe place for you to stay and be observed (RCOG, 2020).
