The New Covid Rules for Three-Tier Lockdown
Words Sarah Adama
Six months since the government imposed a national lockdown, it seems that there is no end in sight with the rising COVID-19 cases. This week, Prime Minister Johnson in an effort to avoid another lockdown, announced a new plan to tackle the differing transmission rates across the country. The new 3-tier system sets out different restrictions on local areas, these restrictions will depend on the increase or decrease of COVID-19 rates.

What is the 3-tier System?
Tier 1: Medium
The 10pm curfew on bars, pubs and restaurants will remain. Social gatherings of more than six people are banned, with the exception of funerals and weddings. With most areas in England at this level, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has warned the capital that “this could change very quickly.”

Tier 2: High
Pubs and restaurants will remain open – with a 10pm curfew – however, households cannot mix in these settings. Whilst households cannot mix indoors, two households can meet in a private garden, but this is restricted to 6 people and social distancing rules apply.

Tier 3: Very High
This is the highest alert level. Local areas at this level must adhere to strict rules; pubs and bars to close, with the exception of restaurants and pubs that can operate at restaurants.
Households are not allowed to mix - indoors or outdoors – whilst non-essential shops, schools and universities will remain open. Residents of local areas at this level are advised to avoid non-essential travel and travel outside of their area. Whether gyms, betting shops, casinos and beauty salons close, is at the discretion of local Members of Parliament.
Liverpool city region is amongst few others at this level - leisure centres, gyms, betting shops, casinos and gaming centres must close down in this region. Other regions include Knowsley, Wirral, St Helens, Sefton and Halton.
