Stay inspired
Even though business may be at a standstill, this is a great time to do some research and stay inspired by the work of other great hairstylists around the world. Begin to create an archive of images and words that inspire you. Have fun and be creative!
Have vision
I have always been a visionary and a believer in what I’m doing. Having vision gives you the ability to be resilient and motivates you to continue to work through this uncertain & unstable time. Therefore, begin to remind yourself of the vision you once had that made you begin in the first place or use this time to create a new vision for your business. Do not lose heart.
Love what you do
I have been in the hair industry for over 20 years. I started working at Toni & Guy in Brighton in the late nineties and worked my way up to becoming a salon & academy educator, before founding my own business Hairsmiths in 2011. It’s one room with styling 5 positions. This is my passion and I love it, that keeps me going. When issues come up along the way, it is easier to find solutions when it’s something you love to do. Take this time to reflect on whether the industry is really for you and whether it is truly something that you love. If not, explore other industries and find your passion.
Have compassion
No matter what your clients are going through, have genuine compassion, treat others how you’d like to be treated and you will never go wrong. I personally run all the salon’s social media and the websites. I have made it available so that clients can contact me during this time if they feel concerned and uncertain. I have been overwhelmed by the support and love shown to us by our clients who have offered to pay for the appointments that we have had to reschedule because we are unable to work, as a sign of their commitment to us!

Build relationships
I believe that we have such strong relationships as a foundation of our business that we will undoubtedly weather this storm & come back stronger than ever! We have built a family of stylists & clients. The salon is our working home and family are always there to support one another no matter what. Running a business and maintaining relationships with clients should always be a family matter. Create a safe space, a positive environment and speak positive words that will inspire your clients. Words are so powerful.
