Black history month celebrates the contributions and achievements of black people in history, but it’s more than that alone. It’s about realising we have been afforded the opportunity to shape history. As we highlight the achievements of the past and present, we must know that the work isn’t done. In fact, it’s just getting started. In a society that has tried to fragment our young black girls (and boys), we have a chance to inspire the next generation, remove the limitations of their mind, instil confidence, self-worth and ambition as well as the knowledge, strength and boldness to take risks. Whilst we then acknowledge the past, we must be intentional about the future. We chose 33 black women who are making significant contributions in their industries. These women haven’t had the smoothest journeys or the straightest paths, many have had to break barriers to be where they are now. ‘A Letter to Myself’ is a statement - one that says we can shatter the ceiling for the next generation of black, female industry leaders. We can’t reverse the past or go back in time to remove the hurdles and barriers we encountered, however, what we can do is mould the future. If we can create a future and stand in as role models, it enables young black girls to thrive and conquer. Not forgetting the past, but looking to the future, what would you tell your younger self?
