Dear Rachel,

What an amazing journey that you are about to embark on. Life is full of ups and downs, challenges and celebrations. As you may expect, your journey is not that of the so-called norm. You will become a mother in both your younger and later years but rest assured this will not hinder your achievements in any way. At the moment, education appears exciting through the things that you learn but scary as you appear different to the majority of your peers.

Soon there will be more people that look like you. People of mixed heritage will become the norm as all races and cultures will eventually blend into one. You will even find hair products and adverts with those that resemble you.I know this seems far away but believe me it will happen sooner than you expect. So don't be scared to embrace your beautiful brown skin, curly hair and interesting culture.

Grab the opportunity to learn as much as you can because knowledge is power regardless of what year it is.Remember to have a good balance, enjoy life, explore, celebrate, focus, learn and most importantly, educate. You will become the person giving others opportunity through work and experience and you will be the one that will embrace those that are different.

Rachel Shaw
