Nicola Wright
Founder of Niks Skin, Nicola Wright has created a safe space for women and men to reveal their scars.
WOTC: Tell us about the beginning of your brand?
Nicola: I had never suffered from bad skin before, however after being under a stressful and difficult situation, I experienced really bad breakouts that forced me to visit a number of specialists. I ended up spending a lot of money for no solution, leading to a loss of trust and faith in businesses and people in the industry.
Separately, I have always been interested in skincare and it led me to go on a personal journey to find out why skin misbehaves. I went to train under the best possible trainers in advanced skincare and I spent 12 months becoming knowledgeable in treating every skin condition possible. I wanted to create a product that would make everyone feel comfortable, which was tailored for the individual.
The skin is so much more and what you put on your skin matters. It needs to be looked at with a 360 approach. I created a safe place within a community where anyone can come and feel comfortable. Whether they have experienced stress, acne or inflammation, we have a doctor on hand, a masseuse and we offer agitation courses.
WOTC: Amazing! And tell us more about creating the clinic you’re in now and the others you’re setting up?
Nicola: The Clinic we’re in now is creating a safe place. Everyone can come to a private consultation area, free from before and after pictures. We have clients that come from all over the world, but we don’t post on socials, we are not trying to make loads of clients and get a fortune. It's more about providing a safe space to reveal their scars, acne and ailments, free from the scrutinising eyes of social media.
A lot of our clients are in a membership program to receive frequent treatment and care. The services we offer go beyond skin treatments, as one client testified that she no longer comes solely for the treatments, but for the female nature, self-care and sitting down and sharing was what she needed.
Making clients feel comfortable is a big part of what we do and although our staff is made of different people with diverse personalities, they have been trained to show compassion and empathy while treating clients, allowing their reticence to fall away due to the safe space our hub provides. The hub is very gender-neutral
I have been a mentor for other facialists within the area and it happened naturally about three years ago. I was asked questions by those joining the industry and other facialists and it creates a nice and safe atmosphere. It didn’t come from advertising but from people asking me for help in how to address clients' skin conditions and their struggles. Creating a place where you can be yourself, authentic and be able to help people is what drives me and being able to see the results.
WOTC: Tell us about what projects you are working on?
Nicola: We are hoping to create a much different space, have a lot of affiliates working with us and more consultations to discover what affects people’s skin conditions, whether it’s due to working from home and not seeing people for so long. We look to create a hub, where people can get a nice massage or facial, can meditate or better their mental health - a community to take refuge in. It’s not as simple as treating skin in three days as skin specialists delude people with. We are moving away from that course and looking to fill the gap and understand how to treat different skin types, which short courses are not able to give that detailed knowledge. This information will be able to help several people suffering from skin conditions.
WOTC: Is there anything else you would like to mention or let the readers know about your business?
Nicola: what drives me is helping people and what sets us apart from other beauty parlours or clinics is that we are all about the client.
