The WOTC Health Editors’ Key Tips on Dealing With Blue Monday
Our health and wellness editors who make up a group of qualified doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physicians and therapists to name a few, have come together to help you view ‘Blue Monday,’ in a completely new way. Here’s what they have to say:
“The world has a way of always telling us how we’re meant to feel. Often these things subliminally affect us if we don’t take time to evaluate. Instead of dwelling on what’s meant to be ‘Blue Monday,’ why not take some time to meditate on things you’re grateful for? You could right then down on ‘post it’ notes and stick them somewhere prominent, or even take photos of them and make an album on your phone that you can run to the next time you’re feeling low. Let’s be intentional about the way we feel - you have the power to produce your happiness!”
Dr Emma, Senior Health Editor
“The concept of ‘Blue Monday’ was published in 2005 as part of a sky travel press release, declaring it as the most depressing day of the year. It is important to consider that before 2005, Monday 17th January was just another 'normal' Monday and had no negativity or depression attached to it. So take this day as your personal day, redefine what this day means to you or what you want it to mean to you. Write it. Say it. Post it. Share it. I've decided to redefine my day today as a 'Gold Monday’”
Annabel, Psychology & Wellbeing Editor
“Why not tackle the ‘blues’ with a swim, gym workout or fitness class. Exercise helps to relieve you of stress, clear your mind, brighten your mood and it releases endorphins which is a plus!”
Bevery, Fitness Editor
“My top tip for managing any blue day is to be prepared; this can help to stay on top of things and minimise stress. So set your alarms, plan any tasks, meal prep to make sure you get your fuel for the day, and be sure to make time for self-care.”
Yetunde, Mental Health Editor
My top tip for ‘Blue Monday’ is doing something that will make you happy. Research shows that laughter has multiple benefits on the mind and body. It causes the release of serotonin, which lifts the mood!
Why not try:
- Watching your favourite show
- Meeting up with friends
- Going for a walk, whilst listening to your choice of music.
Just make sure whatever you do makes you happy!

Are New Year's Resolutions a Fad? Here’s What the WOTC Team Are Pledging to Do With Their 2022
We’re two weeks (and a day) into 2022 and let’s be honest, it’s usually at this point that most of our ‘new year’s resolutions’ and plans for the year go out the window — even if you won’t admit it. WOTC’s editor-in-chief Phadria Prendergast asked the entire team what they wanted from their 2022, and here’s what they had to say
WOTC’s editor-in-chief Phadria Prendergast asked the entire team what they wanted from their 2022, and here’s what they had to say:
I want to build the largest art community starting with 1,000 to 5,000 by the end of this year. I also want to have a VR & maybe physical exhibition, and finally.. no procrastination this year, anything I need to do, do it straight away.
Shemaiah, Art Editor
“This year, I'm going to be more intentional about relationships and getting to know the people around me sincerely. I'm also going to start studying again as I have an exam to sit in October!”
Dr Emma, Senior Health Editor
“Focus less on the big things and more on doing the little things well.”
Dorothy, Legal Editor
“To become consistent in all things; from fitness to building relationships — consistency is key.”
Bethany, Fashion Editor
“Personally, I have jettisoned making ‘new year’ resolutions. ‘New year, new me’sounds good but isn’t as practical as we want it to be. So there's no NEW resolutions for me in 2022, just improvements of the old ones. I have a developing ability to listen, so this year I have resolved to improve on it and practice such skills more frequently.”
Dr Annabel, Psychology and Well-being Editor
“To have a sound mind. To say ‘no’ more. To be more ‘me.’”
Dr Alexis, Health Editor
“Adapting a new way of thinking, to always be content in every chapter I encounter and every milestone I hit. Most importantly, just to always be me. It sounds very simple, but the simplest tasks are always the most difficult.”
Bevery, Fitness Editor
“This year I aim to evolve and grow as a person, so my New Year Resolution is to build sustainable relationships and to push beyond my comfort zone - both in my profession and in (personal) endeavours I’m involved in!”
Barbara, Construction Editor
“I don’t actually believe in New Year's resolutions but I do believe in setting achievable goals for yourself throughout the year. I’ve put together three things that I want to achieve in the first three months (of the year) and after that, I’ll set myself another set of goals for the next three months and just measure my progress that way. I do actually think it’s better that way so you can actually measure your progress throughout the year and look back at it, rather than just writing down a New Year’s resolution somewhere and forgetting about it until next year or ‘till another New Year.. then you realise you haven’t actually done it.”
Faith, Social Care Editor
“I’m going to be more intentional about my wellbeing and I'm going to pay more attention to the little things rather than focusing on the big things.”
Krystle, Property Editor
“My resolution this year is to be healthier, to lose weight, to be more focused, in terms of completing tasks and most importantly to be mindful of mental health and spirituality. Not resolutions, but new habits.”
Angie, Image Editor
“I have a few resolutions but my major resolution for this year is to read more books. Reason being there are a lot of tips and key messages in particular books that I think can be applied in my life. I think that motivational books or speeches create a positive and optimistic impact on life. They boost your confidence and help in developing a positive outlook towards life. Books make you realize how powerful you can be in your life.”
Amanda, PR Assistant
“The key to sustainable wealth & growth is contentment #iamhappyhere. The start of the 2020s decade has been a whirlwind, with incredible highs and lows across the board. The world has seen firsthand how quickly change can upend one's entire existence. For me, 2021 was a much-needed year! One of the first lessons learned at the start of this decade was to be adaptable, but the biggest takeaway is contentment. I'm happy here, regardless of the season since I've learned to adapt to the numerous seasons in my life. Trusting that this marathon called life will eventually lead me exactly where I need to be. I’m going to enjoy every moment happily and content. My new year's resolution is to do just that.”
Uyi, Fashion Editor
“2022 is my year of health and wellness! Being pregnant and giving birth through the first lockdowns meant I couldn’t go to the gym or spas to really unwind, whereas now, I’ve gotten into a great fitness routine alongside time to pamper myself as frequently as I feel my mind and body needs. I’m hitting my health and wellness goals this year.”
Liz, Finance Editor
“To up my networking game; lose weight; complete a 100 days of code; learn a new language and become better with communicating and responding to my phone”
Sandra, Tech Editor
“To be more intentional this year with my decisions and time.” Jennifer, Fashion Editor “My New Year's resolution is to do a sports activity in order to keep fit, stay away from sweets and sugar, and to read more.”
Aisha, Health Editor
“A few things I hope to do “this year” is to stop eating ice (May never happen), spend more money on things I don’t need — because why not and most importantly, I will get my 1st class Law degree.”
Beverley, The Corner
“My New Year's resolution this year is to always stay focused and remember my “why”. I drop out of things quickly because I get bored, so I need to remember why I do certain things and this can be applied to everything I do, whether it be going to the gym, work or anything.”
Erika, PR Assistant
“Find ways to work smarter. Work smart, not hard. Hard work doesn’t mean anything. You can gain the same result by having the right systems in place, being more organised, having your administrations well thought out, well drafted and so forth. There is a way in which one can do many things without actually overworking the mind and the body.”
Sandy, Branding Director
“I have decided to be more intentional about everything I do. This means taking more time out to think and listen than I would normally do. All in all, it’s just about growing into a better version of myself without any pressure from external factors but letting it happen naturally from within myself.”
Ebun, Health Editor

Have You Got Room for Me?
Words Faith Wilcox
For many the traditional route of a family seems like the straightforward answer and in some circumstances adoption. Currently there are 40,000 children that enter the care system per year. Many children have been separated from their families for their safety. Fostering is not a traditional family unit, but it might be the best thing you do this year.
Fostering is the perfect opportunity to give these children a fresh start in the New Year. Like many things the New Year brings hope of better.
Have you considered bringing hope to children and young people in the care system? Fostering is not a permanent arrangement although they can be long term arrangements. In this respect it is quite different from adopting. Adoption is legally binding and has difficulties in resolving breakdowns of adoptions as the child is not the responsibility of the local authority but yourself. Although this is rare, fostering gives you more flexibility on this front.
When considering being a foster carer, you can select the age group and the duration of time you would like to foster. However, you need commitment and understanding. Fostering can make a huge difference to the outcome of a child’s life. It can be a very rewarding experience, on the other hand it comes with its own challenges as every child is different. There is no manual to being a foster parent but you have a lot of support along the way from the local authority to foster carer support groups.
A child might be placed with you due to various reasons ranging from parental drug or alcohol addiction and a number of children are unaccompanied asylum seekers. So, it’s also useful if you speak a second language; however, it is not essential.
To gain more information, your local authority is the best point of contact. Often your local council will hold fostering open evenings. This an opportunity to find out more about fostering in your local area. Also, you can meet local foster carers that can share their experiences with you.
Mandatory requirements to being a foster carer:
21 years old and over
Must be a UK resident or have indefinite leave to remain
Able to take care of a child or young person on a full-time basis
There are other responsibilities that you may come across but this all depends on the type of foster care you offer. You do not need to be a homeowner, but you will need to have a spare room. If you think you are willing to make a difference, start your new year with giving a child a fresh start!

Words Uyi Ilenbs
This New Year's resolution is simple; refresh and revitalise our ‘worn-out’ clothes!
Reprogramming
We often confine ourselves to the same excuses, such as "I don't think I can pull it off" or "I'm not sure it's my style." The first step toward a renovated wardrobe is to change your perspective about fashion and style. With an open mind, the possibilities are limitless.
Research
I believe it is high time to redefine window shopping; reviewing fashion blogs, style articles, and our favourite style queens' social media pages is a terrific approach to get a fresh perspective on your wardrobe. Have you ever seen someone wearing something you own but it looks completely different, or had that "aha" moment because you'd never thought of styling it that way? Do a Google search and have a look around. Take a look at how the other half lives, filter through , and pick up some pointers.
Rearrange
Seasonal clean outs are a given, organising your wardrobe and compartmentalising creates a clear path for you to assemble your ensembles. Categorising with colour, frequently used, garment type and seasons allows you to cross pollinate through your wardrobe. Let’s make some intentional fashion choices this time round.
Restyle & Refresh
Layering is the most effective approach to make your old clothes look new every time. With ease you can bounce from super glam to casual when you layer on your wardrobe features. Adding and interchanging accessories can give a whole new fresh look each time.
Reinvent
Allow your inner artist to shine. Household items like bleach, scissors, and rubber bands sound like a list of adult arts and crafts supplies. Yes, it is! DIY and clothing hacks will give new life to your old clothes and change your old loungewear into a fashionable new fit. It's now or never. Make something new out of something old. Let's make sustainable choices that are fun, fashionable, and eco – friendly

WEB3
Web 3.0 is the third generation of internet services for websites and applications, focusing on providing a data-driven and Semantic Web through the use of machine-based data comprehension. Web 3.0's main goal is to develop smarter, more connected, and more open websites. However, it hasn’t been implemented yet, and it seems that it would take 10+ years until it does as the transition for Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 took about 10 years. So experts believe that is what will happen for Web 3.0.
NFTs and Blockchain
So we have all heard the chit- chat in the last few months of 2021 about NFTs and of course that was only the beginning for NFTs. Artists all over the globe have taken and evolved the craze trend of NFTs from Bored Ape Yacht Club to Hermes sending a supposed cease and desist letter to MetaBirkins NFT Creator.
But what exactly is an NFT? Well for a start it stands for Non-Fungible Token. These tokens represent the ownership of unique items, hence the reason why artists have been taking a liking to it. A variety of things can be tokenized such as art, real estate, collectibles and any other things. The beauty of tokenizing these items is that they can only have one official owner at a time and this is secured by Ethereum blockchain (ethereum is also a cryptocurrency that you can buy but we can get into cryptocurrency another time).
Metaverse
We have heard of the multiverse, we’ve watched Ready Player One and possibly read the 1992 book Snow Crash. So the futuristic predictions (cough especially from the Simpsons) was always a possibility, it was only a matter of when? And it looks like we may see the flourishing of the Metaverse this year.
But what exactly is the metaverse? The metaverse is a collection of 3D worlds which focus on social connections. Users basically “live” within a digital universe and are able to access this virtual world through a VR headset. The first time that the term “metaverse” came about was actually in the 1992 fiction novel Snow Crash.
In 2021, we witnessed our “friend” Facebook decided that it was time to change their name. Of course we all know that regardless of all their different lawsuits concerning, oh I don’t all of our personal data won’t let us forget that they did such. But they decided to change their name and we rolled with it so in anticipation, drum roll, Facebook is now called Meta. Taking upon the focus of the metaverse potential and currently creating technologies for it as well. Mark Zuckerberg has said that Facebook's future is on the metaverse.
So watch out for the development of the metaverse and the world of AR because this year is looking to be digitally wild, although Zuckerberg has said that it could take 5 to 10 years until the key features of the metaverse are mainstream. However, we never know what the future could hold.
Cloud
Ever since the pandemic, cloud technology has been the saving grace for individuals and businesses as remote work has been an aid and bridge for work. According to Ganter, they predict that 47% of knowledge workers will work remotely in 2022 which is a 20% increase from the amount it was in 2019.
So it looks like workspaces, collaboration tools, and monitoring programmes that are cloud-based are here to stay. The emergence of cloud-based security technologies and cloud data loss prevention will likely be the most significant technology breakthrough in 2022.
These are only a few top trends that are predicted for 2022, so watch out as we go into depth on some of these trends and many other techie terms. If you have any techie questions, send them over on the socials and we will definitely write about it.
The Artists Shaping the New Art Worlds
The question on everyone's lips is what is this new found craze all about?
The Artists Shaping the New Art Worlds
Words Shemaiah Gold
I can only imagine how tired you must be of hearing the word 'NFT'... I bet you're wondering what it is all about or maybe you have 0 interest and are just waiting for the hype to die down. Unfortunately, I don't think either NFTs or talk of the metaverse is going anywhere anytime soon and whether you're reading this to discover more within the world of arts and culture or just reading out of curiosity, I think you may benefit from knowing why it's so spoken of, especially considering the fact that NFTs almost act as a glue, merging industries that I thought would never see eye to eye.
You may have noticed that in the title of this article, we used the word 'worlds', mainly because with all the talk on NFTs and the metaverse, it is important to note the defining moment of us now entering a new era of the art world, a now 3D, interactive, technological and innovative space. Artists are the creators of the different metaverse worlds that consumers would exist in. For a long time it seemed as though artists had been sidelined and overlooked in comparison to those in more corporate industries, often being seen to be 'broke' creatives struggling to create demand for their work in an oversaturated market. However, from the youngest to the furthest away geographically, NFT platforms such as 'OpenSea' have opened up opportunities for anyone who has the skill to be able to create and sell their artwork through a process called 'minting'. Oh yes, there is no other time than now that an artist has been more relevant, we are seeing 14 year old artist, Abigail using her art to raise over £100,000 for the conservation of whales. What I'm finding particularly enjoyable about this all is the collaboration between experts from different corporate industries and seeing the harmonious way they are working together with the experts from creative industries.
The question on everyone's lips is what is this new found craze all about?
Digital art has been here since the dawn of computers. But it goes without saying that NFTs have empowered digital artists more now than ever before. The metaverse has opened up the possibilities of what a world of art would look like not only through NFTs but also through gaming, collectibles and VR galleries within the metaverse. I'm calling them 'Art worlds' within the metaverse which are ever changing and being shaped based on how the creator sees their own world. What's interesting, is also how this is translated into the real world through NFT features called 'utilities' which gives you an advantage as an owner. Utility NFTs are those that assign a use to the piece of artwork, such as access to an event, exclusive in-person membership, or assets in a game.
For example, one of the most popular NFTs right now, 'The Bored Ape Yacht Club' gives users access to one of the largest communities with celebrity owners amongst the likes of Eminem and Steph Curry as well as exclusive events. So is the NFT craze all about community? This is one of the main attractions, many are looking for community, a group of people who believe in the same ideals and have the same vision.
The metaverse quite simply shifts ideas of where art is made, collected and exhibited. It is a term for a fully formed online existence coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash a now ubiquitous concept, with virtual reality, augmented reality and other technologies contributing to the expansion of the online world.
To some artists, the metaverse isn’t here to replace reality rather here to probe it, to deepen it and to create space for new questions.
So what exactly are NFTs? NFTs stand for non-fungible tokens which are uniquely encrypted assets that cannot be plagiarised and allow you as an artist to sell your work independently on a blockchain profiting from a large percentage even after it is sold on. They can also be described as a unique unit of data employing technology that allows digital content—from videos to songs to images—to become logged and authenticated on cryptocurrency blockchains, primarily Ethereum.
This all sounds very forward thinking however there are many concerns, amongst one of them are NFTs being considered more about ego and money than art.
I can see that if you take into consideration some of the artists jumping on the NFT bandwagon, the likes of Damien Hirst, you may know him as creator of the famous pregnant lady emoji album cover that went viral, who released the project 'The Currency' in July last year, that statement wouldn't be so hard to believe. Hirst put 10,000 NFTs up for sale, each corresponding to a unique spot painting, for $2,000 a piece. But there was a
catch: after two months, the collector had to decide if they wished to keep the NFT or the physical art work. Whichever one they didn’t choose would be destroyed, forcing the owner to gamble on which version will be more valuable in the future.
Interestingly, there would always be opinions and questions asked whenever there is change or something new arises in the world. These new technological crazes lead to the conversation of how art should be traded and viewed. Who gets to ascribe value to art? Previously, for example, digital artists could build up large followings on social media, attract freelance commercial work, and maybe sell prints and other merchandise with their designs, but they had trouble monetising digital art directly, as consumers asked, Why should I buy what I can screenshot for free?
"Everyone can be an artist. Everyone is creative. That’s what crypto art means to me – open access to art. The world beats it out of us, but creativity is in our DNA. With crypto art, all you need is internet connection and an idea.” A statement made by XCOPY, London based NFT artist.
So what does this all look like in 2022?
Works from Mike Winkleman aka Beeple such as his collection titled 'EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS ' have sold for over £60,000,000. He made one piece of art every
day from May 1, 2007 and posted them on social media without a break. On 11 Mar 2021, the collection was sold at Christie’s and went on to become the most expensive NFT ever. We could also say that it played a key role in driving mainstream media attention to the digital art form. Throughout 2022, there is no doubt that we are going to see younger artists emerge and take over the digital art space, something I think is well overdue.
It is evident that the art world has now become the central point for the merging of different industries with all the talks on top corporations and businesses getting involved in the conversation, recently we saw fashion brand PrettyLittleThing launch their own exclusive Bored Ape NFT collection having many confused as to what would be the point and why they would make such a move. As the NFT world is still in it's very early stages, we don't know what it could evolve into within the next 10 years but it's very exciting to imagine what it could be, the possibilities are endless.
We are seeing the fashion world dipping their foot into NFTs even more with luxury fashion houses like Givenchy partnering with graphic artist Chito who Givenchy had already worked with for their spring 2022 pre-collection. Givenchy's creative director Mathew Williams has co-created a series of 15 unique graphic designs. The collection will feature the same bold prints used in the spring pre-collection, building on the air-brushed characters and symbols. The difference is, these rare images will be NFTs.
Not only are we seeing brands and businesses get involved, but we are seeing political leaders like Melania Trump collaborate with artists to create their own collections. Her first NFT offering, titled Melania’s Vision (2021), is a watercolour piece of the former First Lady’s eyes by French artist Marc-Antoine Coulon. In an Instagram post, the artist said, “I am very glad and honoured to collaborate in this operation with Mrs. Melania Trump. This collaboration has taken place under the best possible auspices with full artistic confidence and with great efficiency and understanding on both sides of the common expectations for such a charitable operation.” The Melania’ Vision also comes with an audio component, a recording of Trump that serves as a “message of hope” in which she says, “My vision is: look forward with inspiration, strength, and courage.”
Artists have always been world changers but I think now, it may be more evident to see the importance of being able to translate ideas through a particular medium and the affect it would have psychologically. If you're an artist, don't hesitate to explore this new world or as an art collector, it is now much more accessible to have your own art collection of pieces worth thousands.
Here are some artists making a mark in the NFT world:
Maliha Abidi created her collection with the goal of making the NFT space more inclusive and diverse by introducing more female characters as well as donating a percentage of primary sales to funds that focus on gender equality, girls’ education, and mental health in marginalised societies.
Blake Kathryn is an L.A-based 3D artist who creates dreamlike experiences across various forms of media. Her vibrant palettes in neons and pastels have ethereal undertones that transport the viewer to a surreal world and demonstrate themes of nostalgia. 'Iconic Crypto Queen', an artwork inspired and purchased by Paris Hilton is her most celebrated NFT to date.
Trevor Jones seamlessly blends art and technology. His highest-selling piece, Genesis, which depicts Batman in his own unique style is the result of a collaboration with the comic book designer José Delbo and is one of his highest sellers.
“Although I’m a traditional comic artist, NFTs have allowed me to evolve my art and collaborate with other artists to create pieces I never thought were possible,” Jose Delbo.
He has worked on Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl, The Transformers, NFL SuperPro, among other comic books.
Hackatao are an artist duo experimenting with a variety of different digital art pieces in the crypto art space. According to Hackatao, '10 years in the crypto art space are the equivalent of 100 years in the physical art world, everything moves at the speed of light.' The contemporary artworks from them, dwell on a wide range of social issues from environment and humanity to crypto with references to art history, symbolism, psychology, and gaming. The intrinsically crafted pieces pair black and white details against vibrant pops of colour. Each work of art leaves a HACKATAO signature, which is now iconic in the NFT industry.
Last but not least, there are the 'Crypto Barista's' who aims to build a community of like- minded individuals that appreciate art, caffeine, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The project’s ambition is to initially open a physical space in NYC where art and innovation are at the forefront. The future of Crypto Baristas beyond that will be up to the holders and followers of their campaign. They offer exclusive party and club access for holders of their 'rarest characters' as well as exclusive merchandise.
New Year, New Exam
Dr. Alexis takes you through her top tips to remaining focused when you still have to study through the holidays.
New Year, New Exam
Words Dr Alexis Nelson
Dr. Alexis takes you through her top tips to remaining focused on your studies during the new year.
The countdown has stopped and now you are faced with the next round of summative exams. The feeling of guilt surrounding enjoyment during exams is often more crippling than people believe. In my 2nd year of medical school I found myself in the middle of my room, notes scattered across the floor to cover every inch of my carpet.
I made a small nest in the middle and then proceeded to wail in despair about the amount of facts I had to remember before this exam. So this is a list of tips I wish I had sent to myself all those years ago that probably could've saved me a few tears and a few hours of sleep!
Fine tune who you listen to: Sometimes we have to question where our stressor originates from. There can be so many people to listen to in university. From your course mates, to your professors to Family. It's important that during the lead up to exams you identify who you can work with who can not only help you. There is a saying that you are a mosaic and you are a reflection of the people around you. Find a person like a mentor, study group or community that can help you study for exams. Maybe it's just someone to be accountable to. When I started listening to the right people. My grades improved!
There are even inner voices stemming from childhood and past failures that will come back to tell you you're not able to complete these tasks! So this even means taking care of your music playlists right down to the shows we watch.
Plan a strategy: My biggest struggle is organising myself! My mind is a sieve and its retention power keeps getting less! So how do I plan a strategy? Simple. I don't do it alone. I make sure that someone else outside of my study circle knows my exam dates. So I can be held accountable for my hours studying. I also take time (sometimes half a day!) Just writing out realistic plans. This may include days where you only study one subject
Be real with yourself: Humans can be a storehouse of emotions. We have memories both short term and long term that hinder us. We have good habits and bad habits. Some people function on 8 hours of sleep. Some functions on 4. If you know yourself and your patterns you can make the most of them and target studying to your peak hours and use your downtime to rest!
Keep a simple diary or a planner: This is to take note of short reflections in the day. You can also do this list to do lists for your studies. Dr Annabel Gold gives us a reality check & some personal tips on how to reflectively enter the new year
Happy New Year! Have you ever sat down and wondered, what does this ‘Happy New Year’ statement actually mean to me? Is it about having a new opportunity to start again? Is it about having the fresh start of a whole new year? Is it about saying bye to a rubbish year and hello to a better one? Perhaps for some, entering a new year doesn’t mean much and isn’t that exciting. Although we all shout it to each other at 12am on 1st January, ‘Happy New Year’ is a subjective matter.
Personally, I have jettisoned making ‘new year’ resolutions, ‘new year, new me’ sounds good but isn’t as practical as we want it to be. As many of us go up and down sorting out major activities and organising new year parties, new year food, drink etc, in my heart and mind there have been a few thoughtful evaluations and reflections on the new year and what I want 2022 to look like for me. Evaluation is the engine oil progress, so whatever is evaluated enhances progression and development.
The end of a year and the start of a new one, fuels the opportunity to change positively, hence the idea behind new year resolutions. But I believe that resolutions can be for a new day, new hour or new minute. At any and every moment, the opportunity to change and be made new is always right beside us, we don’t have to necessarily wait for a new time, day or year.
My last few days of 2021 were the best days for me to sit still and observe. Despite moments of shopping and running some errands, I was able to spend adequate time reviewing and thinking on special words and advice that were given to me at pivotal moments in that year. I reflected on certain questions and answers I presented to myself. It was necessary for me to have such thoughtful reflective moments to end 2021 so that I could be clear on the attributes, resolutions and convictions that can journey with me into 2022.
Towards the end of the year, I began to draw away from social media and spend less time on Instagram especially. The feeds that come up on our media platforms subconsciously suggest ideas of how we should live and what we should look like - Even in 1 minute of scrolling through stories and pictures of another, an idea you didn't ask for has been deposited in your mind, the continuity of this can make you intellectually weak and unproductive. The first three months of the year for me will include a virtual lockdown, a pause on the scrolling and watching. This is a great practice for anyone who wants to develop more of a focus this year, it requires more quieting of the mind.
Another resolution I have for this new year isn't so new. I have decided to take the good skills, abilities and attitudes from last year and simply improve on them. For example, Last year, my ability to listen developed frequently and this year I intend to further develop that ability daily. Resolutions don’t always have to be new, they can just be improved on, so take that one thing you do or did well and do it better or do it more.
The time to set goals is when you’re motivated to keep them, not because the calendar flipped to 2022. But I guess New Year is the time when you almost can’t help but think about making new goals — Even though most people break resolutions, they talk about making them again, the triumph of hope over experience. The best way forward is to ensure that your goal has a reason, make it clear why you want to achieve this goal and define why it is so important for you to achieve it.

A Look Back at the 2021 WOTC Events
As we say goodbye to 2021, we couldn’t bring the year to a close without highlighting the remarkable events we’ve had, which has seen women supporting women, sending the ladder down and coming together to create real change.
We began our year of events with Europe’s biggest female conversation during Women’s History Month, featuring 100 female hosts and speakers and 27 panels across 6 consecutive days, who included everyone from Tom Ford’s former PA and FLOWERBX founder Whitney Bromberg Hawkings, Maria Hatzistefanis of Rodial, the Mayor of London’s senior digital communications strategist Charlie Lait, as well as press gurus from Bottega Veneta & Bvlgari.
As fashion month arrived, WOTC Magazine celebrated the various long-awaited Fashion Week’s from New York City to London with a two-day event, featuring intimate talks on luxury, retail, social media and sustainability from global leaders within the sector and a sustainable runway featuring AQ/AQ.
We honoured and supported the incredible Malaika foundation, founded by Nöella Coursaris Musunka at a private breakfast at Nobu, in Park Lane to kick off the two-day event. Malaika is on a mission to empower girls and their communities through education and health programs.
Guests at WOTC Fashion Week included a foray of former and current WOTC cover girls such as Mariya Dykalo, Aspinal of London’s Creative Director; Marine Tanguy of MTArt Agency, Emily Rea & Thais Cipolletta of The Restory and HLD’s Hannah Holland. Friends included international artist Nat Bowen, Sherrille Riley of Nails & Brows, Mumble Forum’s Monique Vega Hodgson, and musical artist Nqobilé. Luxury cars took guests to talks at Selfridges and the Bvlgari Hotel London.
The following day, we were back at Nobu for a reception of Prosecco and canapés, whilst we watched a number of emerging fashion brands walk down the runway, alongside legendary womenswear label AQ/AQ, at WOTC’s sustainable catwalk.
Finally, we brought the year to a close with the red-carpeted New Faces Awards ceremony, an evening that sought to honour the myriad of achievements and contributions of our 60 nominees at the illustrious Berkeley hotel in Knightsbridge. Alongside the spectacular evening, guests enjoyed a 3-course meal and a never-seen-before panel titled ‘sending the ladder down,’ which featured Alexandra Shulman; former British Vogue EIC.

When the news of the beloved Virgil Abloh’s passing was announced via his personal Instagram page, the sudden loss shocked fans and friends alike. Not only did he create, but he also inspired a new generation to dream past their shortcomings. Even without having had decades-long of a career, his impact was tangible. Here we look back at his life and career and celebrate the man that was, Virgil Abloh.
1990’s: Before fashion was music, DJ’ing had become an outlet for Virgil starting in his early years in High School. Playing at fashion parties, rap gigs and festivals, in an interview with The Guardian, he explained this part of his life, “DJing is my only peace of mind. When the phone is off, I play my favourite songs really loud for myself and I’m not talking to anyone, I’m not managing anything; it’s just like a time when I can listen to music...I’ll be DJing after I’m done designing or doing anything else.”
2002: After graduating from the University of Wisconsin upon completing a degree in civil engineering, Abloh takes an opportunity to meet with Kanye West which undoubtedly changed both of their lives. From that point going forward, West enlists Abloh as a creative consultant which leads to Abloh working at DONDA, West’s creative agency.
2005: Abloh becomes one of the contributors of The Brilliance blog, started by fellow Chicago designers Benjamin Edgar and Chuck Anderson. The site is currently still live with musings and posts from the designers about their interests in at the time. The website’s introduction reads: ‘We’re really internet and we’re really back. A website about things Benjamin, Chuck, Virgil, and various friends & guests think are interesting. Little-to-no specific focus, a bit odd, spelling errors, and incredibly culturally relevant.’
2006: The most notable difference in Abloh’s fashion career is his experience in Architecture. He completed his master’s degree in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
2009: This was an eventful year for Abloh, as he began interning at Fendi alongside West at their HQ in Rome, giving them both an insight into fashion design at a luxury level. In the same year, he and a fellow DONDA colleague opened up a retail conceptual space named RSVP Gallery. The store currently stocks other streetwear and high-fashion brands including Off-White. West and Abloh started to make their names this year at Paris Fashion Week, “We saw this as our chance to participate and make current culture. In a lot of ways, it felt like we were bringing more excitement than the industry was.” Abloh reflects in an interview with W Magazine.
2010: It was this year that Abloh was officially appointed as the Creative Director at DONDA. One of his notable projects was designing the album cover of the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Abloh picked artist George Condo to make various paintings, which led to the current cover of a painting of a ballerina on a red background.
2011: As part of DONDA, the artwork for the Watch The Throne Album by West and Jay-Z was a collaborative effort from the collective alongside religious iconography from Riccardo Tisci (then the Givenchy creative Director). This led to Abloh receiving his first Grammy nomination for ‘Best Recording Package. Several album covers would later be designed by Abloh through out his career.
2012: Pyrex Vision, a line of luxury-priced streetwear was launched as Abloh’s first fashion company. Buying dead-stock Ralph Lauren flannel shirts for $40 and screen printing onto them the Pyrex name with the number 23 (for his childhood hero Michael Jordan). The shirts were an instant hit selling for $550 each.
2012-2013: Abloh shuts down the Pyrex brand and launches Off-White with New Guards Group, as a multi-platform creative endeavour based in Milan. The fashion side was the main expression, with his designs being a culmination of luxury and streetwear.
2014-15: Off-White launches it womenswear line was just in time for Paris Fashion Week, showcasing at low-key presentations for its first few seasons, to which the brands Instagram page grew to 3 million followers. Abloh was also nominated as a finalist for the LVMH prize in 2015, a foreshadowing of his appointment a few years later as Louis Vuitton’s artistic director for menswear.
2016: Off-white menswear has its first runway show at Paris Fashion Week, as well as this Abloh was recognised by Business of Fashion’s, BoF500 index as one of people shaping the $2.4 trillion fashion industry. Outside of fashion, Abloh debuted his Grey Area furniture collection in Milan.
2017: In this year Abloh collaborated with two major brands, Nike and IKEA. Launching an Off-White collaboration with IKEA claiming “together, IKEA and OFF-WHITE look for ways to help create a home for millennials who are just starting out their lives.” The Nike collaboration allowed Abloh to recreate 10 of Nike’s classic silhouettes, named The Ten, the sneaker line continues to be highly sought after, often selling out in minutes.
2018: Louis Vuitton appoints Abloh as the artistic director for menswear, one of fashions highest positions.
2021: LVMH buys Off-White obtaining a majority stake in the company, this was a huge moment for Abloh in deepening his relationship in the luxury conglomerate. On Sunday 28 th November, Abloh would lose his battle with a rare form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma, after being diagnosed 2 years ago. Unbeknownst to the public Virgil continued to create and design while dealing with the disease. A testament to his drive and passion.
To date, Virgil Abloh remains one of the biggest influences in fashion. Inspiring both his peers and upcoming creatives with his approach to design, not being afraid to be different, by pushing the boundaries in his designs. He will be greatly missed as one of fashions greatest visionaries, we at WOTC offer our thoughts and condolences to the Abloh family and his friends.
