1. Virtual Birthday Party

Virtual parties are becoming more and more trendy. Using apps such as Zoom, House Party and Skype allows you to have a large group of friends online at one time. The best way to maximise the party experience is to create a playlist of your favourite music in advance, make an effort to look cute, bring out your favourite snacks and drinks - then party the night away.

2. Online Games with Friends

Online gaming is not an unusual activity, however you can make it interesting by playing games that are more interactive such as poker, heads up, trivia and entering online escape rooms. I am sure they will all make you laugh at your heart’s content.

3. Virtual Movies Night (Movie Marathons)

No matter if you are a Marvel fan or Harry Potter fan, you can enjoy watching your favourite movies online with friends or with those in your household. There is nothing more entertaining than laughing at everyones reactions and commentaries.

4. Picnic in the Garden or in Your Living Room

Depending on the weather, you can create a picnic with all your favourite foods in your garden whilst enjoying the sun on your birthday. Alternatively, if you don’t have a garden you can still create the picnic experience in the comfort of your living room or your bedroom. The important aspects to bear in mind is to have your favourite music playlist you know you’ll enjoy and to remember to collect all your pillows or cushions to put on the floor for extra comfort!

5. Virtual Cooking or Mocktail Making with Friends

You do not have to make your birthday meal by yourself. You can share the load with your friends or family in your house or by using online platforms such as Zoom or Skype. Once you have finished cooking you can test your meals together. If you do not feel like cooking, why not make mocktails instead? This is a great way to have conversations whilst learning a new skill.

Beautify Your Brows

With almost a month away from our eyebrow ladies, many of us are in a bizarre brow situation and thinking about the times we took it for granted. There are many ways to groom your brows from home including tweezing, waxing of even just a simple trim with a pair of nail scissors. My personal favourite is using my Eyelure tweezers to get rid of excess hairs that do not compliment my natural brow shape. Be careful not to ‘over do’ or thin your brows when shaping.  An overgrown brow is better than an accidentally thinned out brow. Although I tweeze my brows every now and again, I am also taking advantage of this isolation period and growing out my brows so that I can achieve a beautiful full and thick shape when I reunite with my eyebrow technician.

At Home Manicure

Many weeks of excessive hand washing has left most of our hands super dry and left our manis chipped. After washing your hands, always follow up with a moisturiser (an intense one if you have dry skin) to bring back the softness and moisture of your hands. My favourites are the Nivea soft lotion and also the Aveeno hand cream! Now that keeping your hands moisturised has been sorted out, ensure that you are still taking care of your nails. Outgrown shellac nails can be removed by soaking some cotton wool in nail varnish remover and wrapping each nail in foil. This is the best time to put that nail kit that has been sitting at the bottom of your draw to use. Grab a nail file and buffer and shape your nails to perfection. Another option is stick on nails which are a great alternative. They can be ordered online and have you feeling fabulous at home!

Brush up on Your Makeup Skills

Makeup is a girl's best friend whether it is just a little concealer under the eyes or a super glamorous look with a highlight and contour. Whilst many of us are willing to work just as hard at home with 5 Skype meetings - why not make yourself look and feel great by applying some light makeup? My go-to makeup would be a light coverage foundation or BB cream, some concealer and mascara with filled in brows. As well as this, makeup artists around the world, including myself have shifted teaching to digital platforms such as Zoom and House Party. There is so much time to brush up on your skills! Cleaning up makeup brushes is one of the most dreaded tasks for most ladies. Using spare time to disinfect and clean your makeup brushes is more effective than you think because it has great benefits on your skin.

Develop a Skincare Regime

With most of us not needing to rush out of the door to catch the train to work, we have the time to develop a skincare routine. Following a routine for your specific skin type is essential. Paying attention to your skin care can often feel like a chore, however with time on your side and a break from everyday makeup, now is a great time to try new products and dedicate some extra time to making your skin flawless - or as close to it as possible. My new found loves are face masks and toners!

Conversations of change may just be what the world is looking for.

The Digital Age

The digital conversation in fashion have existed for decades, we have followed the development of technology closely over the years. From consumers, to business owners and industry pioneers, we have all played our part in the induction of technology in fashion. Over the past few weeks, as the world remains in lockdown, the pressure for several brands to address a new reality and to reposition themselves has been burdensome. Whereas, for many influencers and major game players, they have managed to make the most of the airwaves with live discussions concerning the progression of fashion. The future of fashion is not certain but a question we can ask ourselves is; will things ever go back to normal? It is fair to say that there have been a few mixed feelings, yet action plans have been put into place in hope to find the new blueprint for the ‘now’ fashion.

A.I in Fashion

Artificial intelligence (AI) in fashion will significantly increase, as we move away from conventional operations. We have seen blockbuster movies depicting iRobots taking over the world and even the ushering of A.I into our clothing. The further we move towards A.I in fashion, the more we can understand the role it will play in the consumption, communication and the manufacturing of daily fashion.

shutterstock_686746291.jpg

The Future of Manufacturing

Many innovators have documented how the use of futuristic manufacturing technology can improve the existing fashion techniques. In a time like this, I would say that such ideas and prototypes may become our new norm. Brands are beginning to consider new ways of working and sustainable fashion has been at the forefront of global talks. The marriage between pioneering technology and manufacturing has brought us back to the digital printing conversation.

Talks regarding consumer manufacturing, digitally printed textiles, and an alternative demand and supply chain, have been bubbling across the industry. This will be new territory for many fashion and luxury brands. Although, when we look across the African Diaspora,  we have seen an effective way of working for centuries. Perhaps, delving into how Africa's existing formula of ‘demand to supply’ might be a solution for smaller brands. Which then leaves me asking; can large fashion houses really consider operating like this on such a mass scale? How will this change the way we consume fashion? It’s difficult to put a definite stamp on what lays ahead for the industry but we can bank on more synchronisation between the digital and physical fashion.

If you ever thought that we lived in a selfish world, the pandemic has begun to prove you wrong. In the midst of a global crisis many have demonstrated compassion and selflessness. Giving has become the new order for many. Content Creator & Editor Bethany Boyo explains how.

The global change in behavioural characteristics is being led by none other than the fashion industry, an industry usually categorised as individualistic, self-serving and sometimes cutthroat. In an industry where it would seem that image is all that matters - top fashion houses are changing the narrative.

Fashion Maison’s have been donating countless amounts of funding and aid since the pandemic began. From medical equipment to whole hospital wards for countries stricken by the pandemic such as Italy, the fashion industry has begun looking out for those in need.

LVMH’s renowned prize spanning years and years was set up to help emerging designers find their feet in the industry. Among those who have received the prize are Japanese brand Doublet, Wales Bonner, Jacquemus and many more. This year the Prize takes on a new form - changing and adapting with the times. Though the competition was cancelled, all the finalists will receive an equal portion of the prize money, which will be divided amongst them. LVMH have gone to the extent to provide funding for past winners of the competition during these uncertain times. The fund will be supplemented by the 2020 Karl Lagerfeld Prize allocation.

Taking the Power Back in the Delivery Room

Who is really in control when a woman gives birth? You may think there is only one answer to this - the mother-to-be right? Wrong! In actual fact, many women don’t feel as though they are in control during their delivery. Many mothers continue to express their concern with healthcare professionals such as obstetricians, midwives and healthcare assistants taking the lead during their care and ‘forcing them to undergo procedures’ or actively performing procedures without their consent.

Who is really in control when a woman gives birth? You may think there is only one answer to this - the mother-to-be right? Incorrect! Midwife & Antenatal teacher Jadesola Oginnni explains that in actual fact, many women don’t feel as though they are in control during their delivery. Many mothers continue to express their concern with healthcare professionals such as obstetricians, midwives and healthcare assistants taking the lead during their care and ‘forcing them to undergo procedures’ or actively performing procedures without their consent.

Shutterstock
Shutterstock

Testimonials:

“I felt like I was bullied into having an induction of labour. They told me my baby was big but provided no evidence.” – Helen

“It was my first baby and I was just 16 - I had heard on tv that you could deliver at home, but I was refused that option and was made to deliver at the hospital. I didn’t challenge them because I didn’t know how to, and no one fought for me either.” – Lucy

“It was 1989 and I was new to the country. The midwives and doctors told me that it was normal for all women to have episiotomies. It happened with three out of four of my children. My last child was at home and I felt like I had more control over my body” – Abi

So, what should really happen in the delivery room?

From the point of booking an appointment, women should be given the opportunity to discuss where they would like to give birth. Your appointments are a chance to discuss the options you have as a mother to be, not to be told what to do.

Shutterstock
Shutterstock

Future recommendations for you:

·      Create a birth preference list.

·      If you have an extensive medical history, ensure you touch base with your clinical obstetrician before your delivery date.

·      If you’re unsure about something, make sure you request the hospital guidelines.

Can Fashion Week Become Digital?

While many have been enjoying online shops and planning for the summer, there is also a common feeling that some people miss taking trips to the stores and exploring what exciting new items the brands have to offer. What if this was to become our reality, would everything within the fashion industry adapt to all things digital or would both the industry and consumer struggle?

While many have been enjoying online shops and planning for the summer, there is also a common feeling that some people miss taking trips to the stores and exploring what exciting new items the brands have to offer. What if this was to become our reality, would everything within the fashion industry adapt to all things digital or would both the industry and consumer struggle?

It was not long before I started thinking about fashion week. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the idea of the fashion week becoming digital has become a popular conversation. Initially, I thought, “oh no! This virus is going to change everything”.  However, I soon warmed up the idea that maybe it will not be so bad. Fashion week has been a tradition for many years worldwide and to completely take it away would be unreasonable. There is no secret that the fashion industry is transitioning into the digital space, but how fashion week would adapt to these changes is something exciting to see.

Shutterstock
Shutterstock
Shutterstock
Shutterstock

Shanghai fashion week was the first to kick start the change, transforming a month's worth of fashion events to a seven-day experience featuring 151 brands. The digital edition was streamed via apps.

Shutterstock
Shutterstock

Nothing beats the digital experience! It allows people worldwide to have live access to the shows. There would be a higher level of appreciation of the fashion shows and the display of trends now that everything is digital. The fashion industry has spiralled into a glorious revolution, many barriers have been broken and the scope for more people to experience a live fashion show has expanded. We can now watch fashion shows in the comfort of our homes with snacks in a comfy lounge ready to appreciate the latest trends.

Shutterstock
Shutterstock

The traditional fashion shows should remain, despite the digital edition. All fashion lovers are attracted to the fashion industry for one reason or another, be it the feel of the fabrics and for others it could be the inspirational looks. Having both avenues would allow everyone to take pleasure in it. Fashion week is not just about the shows, but the interactions that take place after are equally important, so if this will help the brand - why not give it a go!

Shutterstock
Shutterstock

The question everyone is asking is; can the fashion week truly go digital?

Yes, yes, yes. The fashion industry is very fast paced and very adaptable to its environment. The likes of Suzy Menkes would benefit from this, she can be in many places at once, allowing brands to have more access to those with influence in the industry as they could do more virtually. A question I will leave you to ponder on is; could it ever be fully replicated online?

In response to the Coronavirus pandemic, there has been an influx of grants, schemes and loans made available by the government, banks and reputable organisations. However, not everyone has been made aware of them - which is where we come in! WOTC have personally explored them all and have chosen the 6 most applicable grants, specially tailored to small business owners and those who are self-employed.

  1. Small Business Grant Fund and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund (RHLGF).

The government will be supporting small businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors. There are two forms of the funding scheme that will support them in the financial year 2020/21 - the Small Business Grant Fund (SBGF) and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund (RHLGF). A £10,000 grant will be provided to retail, leisure and hospitality businesses with a rateable value under £15,000 and retail, leisure and hospitality businesses with a rateable value between £15,001 and £51,000 can access a £25,000 grant. For more information on eligibility please visit GOV.UK.

2. Facebook Small Business Grants Programme

Facebook believes that a little financial help goes a long way and has acted upon it, offering 100 million dollars in cash grants and ad credits to assist small businesses with going digital in this challenging time. There are up to 30,000 small businesses in more than 30 countries that are eligible to receive this grant. A few of the essential requirements include having between 2 and 50 employees, running as a business for over a year and being in or near a location where Facebook operates. More information can be found via the Facebook website.

3. Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS)

The government is supporting small and medium-sized businesses, with an annual turnover of up to £45 million. These businesses are given access to loans, overdrafts, invoice finance and asset finance of up to £5 million for up to 6 years. Small businesses in particular will benefit from this loan scheme. The government will make a Business Interruption Payment to cover the first 12 months of interest payments and any lender-levied fees, resulting in no upfront costs and lower initial repayments. They have also decided to provide lenders with a guarantee of 80% on each loan, which will encourage lenders to maintain the confidence to continue to provide finance to small and medium-sized businesses.  For more information on eligibility please visit GOV.UK.

4. Self-employment Income Support Scheme

The Self-employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) are providing grants to self-employed individuals or partnerships worth 80% of their profits, up to £2,500 per month. For the next 3 months, the scheme will enable you to claim a taxable grant of up to 80% of your trading profits of up to a maximum of £2,500 per month. There is also an opportunity for this grant to be extended if required. You will not have to apply for this grant as HMRC will contact you if you are eligible for the scheme and invite you to apply online. You can find out more via GOV.UK.

5. Enterprise Nation & Crowdfunder UK

Small businesses can set up a Pay it Forward campaign and offer customers the option to pre-book lovely incentives such as meals, a room for the night or a ticket to an event, as a response to a promise to deliver in the future. These fees will be covered by Crowdfunder, therefore everything is free and every penny you raise will go to you. For more information you can visit enterprisenation.com

6. Trouva

Many independent shops across Europe have had to shut down, but Trouva remains open. They are an online marketplace that can help showcase your boutiques to a global audience. Not only do they have a hands on team, 7 days a week, but they also help manage the logistics. To sell with Trouva you must be a boutique with a physical shop and fixed opening hours - in one of their current markets. Products can fall into one of these categories; homeware, fashion and lifestyle. If you are interested then do get in touch with their team via Trouva.com.

WOTC are currently offering a £5000 grant to 10 freelancers affected by COVID-19 - click the link below for more information.

Without You There Would Be No Success

When did women begin to feel a sense of disparity in the workplace? If more women understood the value that they are able to bring into the world of business from start-ups to global firms, we could begin to address and solve many socio-economic issues.

Without You There Would Be No Success

When did women begin to feel a sense of disparity in the workplace? If more women understood the value that they are able to bring into the world of business from start-ups to global firms, we could begin to address and solve many socio-economic issues.

Shutterstock
Shutterstock

Women need not lament on the issues of diversity and inequality, instead we should inspire others by speaking more and be proud of what we bring to the workplace and society. The current issues of diversity and inequality are only an opportunity for new leaders to enter the working world and introduce a restored approach and new mindset.

Be confident in your position as a helper - don’t despise it. Master and identify gaps that no one has yet been able to; this is what is really missing.

Shutterstock
Shutterstock

If there are no platforms, help create them.

Women have innate ability to identify inefficiency. The same intuition you have to recognise what is not in place is what you should use to create a solution.

In order to see different results, you have to be different.

Do not simply conform to your job specification! Bring something different to the table by going the extra mile to help without being asked.

Take your role seriously as there is always room for evolution.

Stop feeling defeated and never become complacent. You will be surprised where consistency, sacrifice and perseverance can take you.

Knowledge is power.

In order to increase knowledge, don’t lose your ability to keep learning. If there is something you don’t understand, do not be afraid to ask someone who does know - after all, two minds are better than one.

Don’t hug your network, share it!

Networking is about sharing, not taking. Build and develop relationships with others to help them reach their goals too.

The Sharing Economy
Top 10 Givers

Although it’s a difficult time for us all, with many forced to lay-off staff members and even file for administration - we have found some incredibly inspirational leaders who are fighting to ensure that this crisis will not affect their staff and local communities, nor will it affect the world at large. The Sharing Economy

By Phadria Prendergast

Although it’s a difficult time for us all, with many forced to lay-off staff members and even file for administration - we have found some incredibly inspirational leaders who are fighting to ensure that this crisis will not affect their staff and local communities, nor will it affect the world at large. This is truly compassion in the midst of chaos.

With 100’s of companies giving back in ways that are unique to them and their city, this list focuses on the cash donations and pledges from what we call the sharing economy.

It was important for us to separate the cash donations and pledges from the good deeds, as we found that in crisis some brands can use this to throw in a few PR tricks! Nevertheless, here is a list of our superheroes who have donated close to £2BN to help millions of those affected by the pandemic.

Jack Dorsey

On 7th April 2020, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter stated via his Twitter account “I’m moving $1B of my Square equity (28% of my wealth) to Start Small LLC to fund global COVID-19 relief”. He has allowed complete transparency of the flow of the donated funds – something WOTC absolutely love as we believe that transparency is very much needed during this time. Dorsey also hinted towards making further donations once the virus had been defused. “After we disarm this pandemic, the focus will shift to girl’s health and education, and UBI”.

Unilever has given €100 million to the consumers and communities who have been affected by the virus around the world. To their customers and suppliers, they will offer €500 million of cash flow relief through early payments and the extension of credit. They will also protect their employees and contractors from pay cuts for up to three months - whether they work full-time or part-time.

eBay have launched a program specially designed to assist retailers who do not have an e-commerce presence, to begin selling online. They have pledged an amount of $100 million in support. eBay stated via their Twitter account “Local businesses power eBay. So now we’re doing our part to help stores like Time Warp Boutique stay open — even if their doors are closed”. We are in huge support of this opportunity that eBay has created, especially as we are in the digital age.

The CEO of Facebook has created a Small Business Grants programme designed to financially support small businesses during this time. $100 million is being offered in cash grants and ad credits to help the business and its employees, assist with the cost of rent, reach more customers and take care of working costs. Zuckerberg and his wife Dr Priscilla Chan have also given $25 Million towards the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have created a research project called the Covid-19 Therapeutics Accelerator with the purpose of carrying out research to establish whether any drugs that already exists, can be used to treat COVID-19. Facebook currently has its 45,000 employees working from home in which Zuckerberg has vowed that, even for those who are not able to fulfil their jobs from home, will still get paid in full. Zuckerberg believes many companies can afford to take care of their employees and wants to be the example that many other companies follow.

The world’s richest man has created and contributed $25 million towards a fund dedicated to supporting Amazon’s US based delivery workers who are employed by delivery service providers. He has also made it possible for the general public to also make donations to the fund – something many are unhappy about, but we love this idea. During this time, many of us may want to give but we don’t know how, this is a great opportunity to do so. Additionally, Amazon aim to hire 100,000 additional employees opening the opportunity for many to work.

Their donations since then have largely gone towards helping local businesses with any urgent needs such as medical assistance or food. Nike are especially attentive to the areas and communities in which their employees live and work in.

Renting & Coronavirus: What Do I Need To Know

Worried about what your rights as a renter are during the current Coronavirus pandemic? Senior Property Manager Krystle Sarkodie, has you covered with 4 key things you need to know as a tenant to help give you peace of mind.

During this time of uncertainty, the government has vowed to protect private renters from immediate evictions. So, just what are your rights? We have outlined the key things you need to know about being a renter and why your landlord is not permitted to evict you without warning until 30 September 2020.

1. As of 26 March 2020, under the Coronavirus Act 2020, many landlords will be unable to begin any proceedings to gain possession of their property unless they have given their tenant(s) at least three months notice. The Act prevents any landlord from evicting a tenant immediately. Additionally, any existing or new claims for housing possession have been suspended for 90 days as of 27 March 2020, with landlords being encouraged not to start any new requests to gain property possession without having a relevant reason.

2. If due to the pandemic, you have lost your job or are unable to find one due to the lack of available positions at present, the government is offering support with finances. You can find out which financial grants you are eligible for via GOV.UK. You are still liable to pay rent therefore, if you are financially able to do so, then you must continue. If you are not financially able to pay your rent, discuss this with your landlord and see what your options are. Your landlord may be able to reduce the amount you pay or allow you to pay nothing for a short period of time.

3. If anyone in your household has Coronavirus symptoms, your landlord is not permitted to evict you from your property. If your landlord attempts to do so, follow the correct Government procedures which you can view via GOV.UK.

4. Landlords still have a legal obligation to make sure that their properties are up to standard and tenants have the right to live in conditions which are warm and safe. Your landlord is required to make any repairs necessary to ensure living conditions are up to a good standard and without any hazard.

Working from Home DOS and DON’TS

Words by Sayo Akinlude

Been struggling to get into the rhythm of WFH? Interior designer and stylist Sayo Akinlude, has you covered with her top tips to help you stay productive.

The Dos:

Take breaks

Taking breaks are necessary to having a successful and productive day. These should be away from your workstation. As going outside is a NO NO, take advantage of the other rooms in your house. If your workstation is in your bedroom, take your breaks in the living room, kitchen, or laundry room if you have one. Utilize every single room and space.

Create a space that motivates you

Right now, social media seems to be everyone’s escape, however, if you’re like me and don’t want to spend your entire day swiping up and down, create a corner, a wall, a space that you fill with motivational things. This can include your daily goals, pictures or quotes. Add some scented candles and a mat as it can also double as your yoga spot - which leads us to point 3.

Exercise

Quarantine is not an excuse to be inactive. It is more of an opportunity to get in shape and keep fit. The United Kingdom is allowing people to go out once a day for exercise, so make the full use of it. Plan your route before going out, to maximize the opportunity. If going out is not for you, set alarms to stretch whilst working - this can even be done in your motivational corner. Regular exercise or stretching helps to improve circulation around the body.

The Don’ts

Work from your bed

I don’t know about you, but my bedroom is designed for maximum relaxation and comfort! So, working from my bed reduces my productivity, I spend half the time debating whether to work or nap. Most importantly, working from your bed will eventually have a negative impact on your brain as your brain will begin to associate your resting space with your working space or vice versa. You will start to find that slowly, you’ll begin to struggle with falling asleep or you’ll constantly fall asleep and get no work done.

Get distracted

Being easily distracted will stop your productivity. Things such as Netflix, your iPad, your phone, are a distraction. Create a space that allows you to focus on your work alone. Sometimes it helps to have your workstation facing the wall.

How COVID-19 Effects the Construction Industry

The government’s decision to put the UK on ‘lockdown has resulted in  many construction sites shutting down to protect the health and safety of employees. Over the next few weeks and months, the spread of the virus within the UK will have a weighty impact on construction activities, causing delays and disruptions to on-site activities, project delivery, employees and project supply chains.

The closure of sites will affect a large amount of people who currently work within the industry. Majority of the subcontractors in the construction industry are self-employed and heavily rely on live construction sites, so COVID-19 raises concerns about the future and finance of their businesses. This is similar to employees whose roles are based on site meaning they may potentially lose their jobs due to the virus breakout. In the midst of all of this, construction companies need to communicate and reassure their employees and the supply chain where possible. They must also implement the ongoing Government policy and advise effectively.

Working from home shouldn’t limit you being active!

Having to stay at home for weeks, potentially even months, doesn’t seem pleasant to many. Seeing the walls of your home for 24 ho urs every day can take getting used to especially if you’re a construction worker who’s used to being on a site 5-7 days a week. Your mind and body are constantly used to being active in one way or another, so this period of solitude can be quite daunting. However, being at home at this time shouldn’t be seen as a negative thing, it should be seen as something to take advantage of - an opportunity to develop you! We rarely get moments like this where we can be at home for long periods of time - even booked holidays off of work can’t compare. During this pandemic, find something to do that will help develop you! I’ve decided to engage in activities and things that will keep my mind active and creative!

The whole world seems to be crumbling in these times of solitude, however that doesn’t need to be your narrative. It’s a perfect opportunity to read books on your discipline/industry and also on topics of interest. There are also free online courses available on The Open University so why not expand your knowledge and learn something new? The best thing about this is that it’s all free and you can do as many as you want - all from the comfort of your home. The courses vary from different languages, education, art, business, science, law and many more.

You can also inspire yourself by reading other stories from other women in your field– and what’s more, you can connect with them online! The whole world has gone digital right now and everyone has turned to the airwaves for hope, entertainment, encouragement and discussions! Make good use of platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook etc. and meet new people who are in your industry. Don’t allow the practice of social distancing to become a time to avoid people. It is especially important during this pandemic, not to only think of yourself, but also of the lives who may be affected. Use this time to inspire, engage and speak via the digital platforms.

That blog or business idea that always wanted to develop it – do it! For those that love to read, why not inspire yourself and read about women in your field? Majority of people have turned to Netflix or daytime TV during this pandemic, which is not a bad thing however what are you learning? How are they developing you in this time? I think that a good balance between pleasure and development is needed during this period, so that when we are free to go back to the working world, we return refined, having developed more knowledge, skills or even having taken up a new hobby! Here are a few reading suggestions for women in construction:

For brands and designers, sustainable fashion is about producing in a way which always considers people and the environment. The aim is to have a system which ensures your brand does not leave a negative footprint.

For consumers, this means carefully thinking about what you want to buy and whether you really intend to wear that new piece you wish to purchase. It’s also important to know which values you are supporting through each purchase you make.

How can consumers become more sustainable?

The big swap

Clothing swaps are at the top of the list. Don’t just throw it away - give that piece a new home.

Seconds please

Buying second-hand means the item already exists. This immediately cancels out the negative impact brought on by the production process.

Better the clothing you know

Stick with what you have in your wardrobe for longer. Quit buying many items and instead invest in items of quality. FYI, key staples never run out style.

Go vegan... and we aren’t talking food

This option is incredibly environmentally friendly as it reduces the negative impact caused by the use of animals.

Less is really more

Think minimalism! Do you really need that new dress? Have you worn the last one you bought? The answer is probably no right? Stop buying items you don’t need.

How can brands and designers become more sustainable?

  • Say no to fast fashion! Choose fabrics and materials that last.

  • Limit the amount of fabric and material that is wasted during the production stage.

  • Increase your awareness of the impact fabric production causes to the environment. Decide to go green or vegan.

  • Garment transportation increases your carbon footprint - reduce this by producing locally.

Quarantine on A Budget: Paprika Cod

Quarantine On A Budget: Paprika Cod

With Talibah Simone

COVID-19 has caused quite an uproar in the supermarkets with arguments over toilet roll and pasta you don’t really need and 2-hour long queues to buy items you already have at home. So, with everyone panic buying, what’s left on the shelf?

On Instagram, health enthusiast and meal service provider, Talibah Simone was asked 'What meal can I make for £5 during quarantine?'. Immediately she accepted the challenge! Although the supermarkets are fairly low on stock at present, if you have the fundamentals, you'll easily be able to whip up a great meal. Firstly, think of what kind of meat or pulses you would like to have. At the moment, the frozen fish aisle in large supermarkets are fairly stocked - keep your budget at a maximum of £3. The price range for rice should be between 50p - £1. Luckily fresh vegetables in most supermarkets are really cheap and you are able to buy them from as little as 32p! For £5.00, I made one of my favourite fish recipes. Paprika Cod! It feeds 2 people, with 2 portions of cod each. At home, I already had onions, garlic and seasonings. If you do not have those, prioritise another £5 to stock up on seasoning.

PAPRIKA COD.jpeg

Shopping List

  • Frozen cod - £3.30

  • Broccoli - 34p

  • Kale - 62p

  • Rice - 70p

Method:

  1. Firstly, mix all seasonings with butter into a bowl and spread evenly over the cod.

  2. Preheat the oven for 190 degrees.

  3. Place the fish in the oven for 20 minutes in either a Pyrex dish uncovered or an oven tray with foil. Add a tablespoon of coconut or rapeseed oil to reduce the skin sticking to the bottom. Cod releases a bit of water so don't be alarmed if the dish seems quite wet.

  4. Whilst the fish is cooking, measure the rice into a cup and level the top.

  5. Rinse the rice thoroughly in cold water until the water is completely clear.

  6. Pour the rice into a pan ensuring to use a low heat. Add double the amount of water.

  7. Bring the rice to a boiling point and place a lid on the top of the pan, still on a low heat.

  8. Cook the rice for 10 minutes.

  9. Once the fish is cooked, sprinkle mixed herbs and add some sliced red peppers (if you have any).

  10. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve alongside your paprika cod.
